Artifact Uprising is the Bomb Dot Com.

Last year, I took a trip with my mom, sister and some family friends to Italy. It was one of my favorite trips of my life. I actually busted out the big camera the majority of the time, and was so excited to get back and sort through the photos.

I had so many photos that I was in love with after I got home. I was a little overwhelmed at what to do with all of them, and decided to make them into an Artifact Uprising book for my mom for Christmas. I have always, always wanted to make a photo book and I am so happy I went with them for my first one. The layouts are simple, and beautiful. I felt like my photos got to be on display, which made me so happy. (Although, I wish some of the horizontal images could have been bigger.) Now that we are in the digital age, (do I sound like my grandma?) I very rarely will print anything out- I am trying to get better at this! That's something so cool of seeing them all bound together in a book.

To see my own images printed in a book that was better than the quality of something you could purchase at a bookstore made my heart happy. (Really though, I was thrilled at how incredible the quality of this book was. I've purchased some in the past that were not so impressive.) I'm definitely going to make another one of my year in Africa soon, and there are so many ideas flowing.. Can't wait to start working on it. With all this being said, I really want to encourage you to simply start printing photos out! Frame them, stick them on your fridge or make a book out of them. (I'm ashamed to be a  photographer and I am honestly the worst!) I promise, you won't regret it.

  1. Love everything about this Alison! Your photos are gorgeous (as always). I think you and I need to go on a trip together so you can teach me how to get such amazing travel photos!
P.S. What are your favorite lenses for travelling? I'm trying to decide if I want to keep what I have (28 1.8 & 50 1.4) for when we go to South Africa or if I want to trade the 28mm in. I'd love to hear your thoughts. :)

    1. thank you so much chantel! you are the sweetest. and i will absolutely take you up on that trip:) yes, please!!

my 50 1.2 rarely leaves my camera! to me, it is the perfect length and has the most lovely DOF. sometimes, and only sometimes i will switch to my 24-105. but mostly, that just sits in my bag:) i just need it in case i need a wider shot! which i did actually use in some of the italy pictures!! i've never used a 28!! do you like it?!

    2. I honestly don't use my 28 much, usually only when we are indoors and I want to get a wider shot than I can with the 50. That's the reason I've been holding on to it cause when we travel to SA we will be visiting our child's foster home and I really want to be able to get as many pictures of it as I can and I don't think the 50 will do all I want it to.

    3. if it helps, when i took pictures of wynne's babies in ethiopia i used my 50! it didn't leave my camera. it was a little hard to get the right angle, so maybe that wider shot will be better!
